During June 20th-21st, 2016, 24th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Quality of Service (IWQoS 2016) was successfully held in Beijing undertaken by State Key Laboratory of Networking and Switching Technology (SKLNST) (in Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, BUPT for short). Qiao Jianyong, the president of BUPT, attended and addressed the opening moderated by Prof. Zhang Ping, the director of the laboratory.
At the beginning of the opening, Qiao Jianyong addressed the symposium. On behalf of the university, President Qiao welcomed all the guests to this symposium. He introduced the university’s new patterns of scientific research and discipline development to experts attending the symposium that BUPT is a comprehensive as well as research university characterized by information technology, formed mainly by engineering majors and coordinated by management, humanities and science majors. The university is a important training base in China for information technology talents. As a state key laboratory in BUPT, SKLNST had already attained many significant achievements in scientific research, becoming a base of high-level scientific research, academic exchange and personnel training. With the pace of the Information Time, BUPT attached great importance to broaden its scientific research directions as well as disciplines. At the beginning of 2014, BUPT has raised Flying Geese Model to change the development model of scientific research and discipline development, whose core purpose is to welcome the challenge with a more positive mind of personnel training and scientific research in advanced education from the information revolution. According to biological research, a group of geese flying in formation fly further with the power of the team. BUPT is a research university with extraordinary advantage in information subjects where every discipline makes as good use as possible of its adjacent disciplines’ advantages. In 2015, BUPT accomplished the planning of discipline construction for the following 20 years and effective connection with the Double First-rate construction plan. BUPT expanded School of Cyberspace Security out of School of Computer Science, which became one of the four pioneer bases. To cope with the rapid development of express industry, based on traditional logistics and industrial economy, BUPT founded the first school of modern posts constructed by National Education Department and State Post Bureau. All above are successful practices of the Geese Model in BUPT. At last, President Qiao mentioned that as the undertaker of this symposium, BUPT attach great significance to it. We sincerely wish that all participants communicated academic knowledge, broaden their horizons and acquire friendship during this symposium.
More than 150 experts and scholars from different universities and enterprises in Asia, Europe and America attended the symposium. Prof. Zhang Ping assumed the president of the symposium, and Prof Xu Ke from Tsinghua University, Prof. Xiaorui(Ray) Wang from Ohio State University assumed the presidents of the Program Committee. Associate Prof. Xie Dongliang from Broadband Network Research Centre in SKLNST assumed Organization Chair.
The symposium centered on the latest research progress of the quality and experience of service and the quality of network protection, including Networking, SDN and NDN, Scheduling ＆ Resource Management, Network Protocols, and System Dependability ＆ Availability. Experts including Prof. Liu Yunhao from Tsinghua University, Prof. Jie Wu from Temple University and Doc. Cui Yongxin from Baidu presented excellent reports of different topics. The reporters raised up widespread discussion among the audience about the topics like “Everything is connected to anything alive”, Wireless networks and mobile computing, and how operators promote service quality. Experts from America including Anwar Walid, Vince Lehman, Takuya Yoshihiro gave lectures in different meetings and communicated with other participants.
Optimization of network service quality is a forever new topic that it changes through different times. Nowadays, with computer network gradually penetrating into people’s daily work and life, more requirements are raised for computer network service quality. IWQoS is the flagship symposium in the field of service quality, which has been successfully held for 23 times. In accordance with the tradition of the symposium, the symposium this time not only provides a platform for experts and scholars from enterprises, users, governments and research centers to communicate with each other, but also bring our domestic industry and academy the latest research achievements in the aspect of service quality overseas.
