Abstract:
Service provision for individuals, organizations, and government agencies lies on context-awareness and knowledge-based decision making. Internet of Things (IoT) systems connect things with identifying, sensing, networking, and processing capabilities and enable automated creation of new knowledge and efficient decision making. However, millions of new devices are connecting to IoT networks thus generating a huge amount of data. How to represent, store, search, organize, and make the best usage of data generated by IoT devices becomes a challenge.
Semantics associates meaning with data, thus allows interpretation of data in context, despite differences in syntax and structure. For IoT, semantics are playing important roles in collaborative technologies with encoding meaning into IoT data to enable computer systems to possess knowledge and support decision making. Semantic technologies offer powerful representations and reasoning techniques to facilitate IoT data and knowledge modelling, querying, reasoning, and discovery. However, these representations and techniques require a considerable amount of resources. The volume of data generated by a vast amount of IoT devices and resource limitations of these devices have given rise to challenges for applying semantic technologies in IoT systems.
Edge and fog computing are emerging paradigms addressing these challenges with moving the computation from the central high powered Cloud or server machine to the edge of the IoT networks. The targeted benefits result from the proximity to data sources and end users. Edge and fog computing targets to address the challenges of: 1) low and predictable latency for end users and applications; 2) secure and privacy-preserving services and applications; 3) long battery life and low bandwidth cost; and 4) scalability.
Aiming to take the advantages of edge computing for implementing intelligent functions in IoT, this talk focuses on semantic reasoning in IoT systems with edge devices. This talk presents an IoT architecture with edge devices and preform semantic reasoning on edge nodes and Cloud. We performed experiments to demonstrate how the edge computing could facilitate IoT systems in terms of data transferring, semantic reasoning, and service provision. We also analyzed how to improve the performance by properly distributing reasoning tasks on the Cloud and edge devices.
