Abstract:

Routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL) is the underlying routing protocol of 6LoWPAN, a core communication standard for the Internet of Things. RPL outperforms other wireless sensor and ad hoc routing protocols in quality of service (QoS), device management, and energy saving performance. The Rank concept in RPL serves multiple purposes, including route optimization, prevention of loops, and managing control overhead. In this talk, I will present several types of internal threats that are aimed at the Rank property and study their impact on the performance of the wireless sensor network. The talk is based on a paper titled “The Impact of Rank Attack on Network Topology of Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks” published in IEEE Sensor Journal.  The paper has received huge attention since it was published where it has 14 citation and 1546 reads. The paper also received a commendation letter from the president of IEEE Sensor Journal for being one of the Top-25 downloaded papers.

Bio:

Jonathan Kok-Keong Loo received the M.S. degree from University of Hertfordshire in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree from University of Hertfordshire in 2003. He is currently a Professor & Chair in communication engineering in the school of Computing and engineering, University of West London. Dr. Jonathan has authored or coauthored over 210 research papers as follow: 85 papers in major journals, 106 papers in conferences, 13 book chapters, 3 editorial publications, 2 white paper, 1 edited book and 6 submitted journals. Majority of the papers are cited and followed by the research community in the public domain. Many of these publications have theoretical and practical significance to the research community and industry. Dr. Jonathan’s core research areas involve interdisciplinary subjects namely Computer Science, Telecommunication, Electronics, and applied Mathematics, contributing the development of ICT systems, applications and services. He is a member of Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) since 1997, member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer (IEEE) since 1999, registered practitioner of Higher Education Academy since 2006, fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2007 and Chartered Engineer (CEng) which a prestigious professional qualification recognized internationally for an engineer who demonstrates the required professional competences in technical and leadership, and possesses effective interpersonal skills awarded by the UK Engineering Council since 2010.
