Abstract:

The cellular network is the most critical network infrastructure to mobile services. It is offering online access to billions of smart devices (like smartphones and tablets) and is playing an increasingly important role to serve trillions of things (wearables and widgets, etc.) Such surging demands are driving the profound revolution of cellular network in the coming 5G, which is moving toward a more flexible and intelligent network. However, another complementary aspect is largely overlooked. This is the device-side intelligence. The traditional cellular network remains almost “closed” to mobile devices and users and offers very limited access to their runtime operations on all cellular protocols. The lack of open access into fine-grained runtime network operations creates barriers for researchers and developers to accurately understand and refine how cellular protocols operate at the device and inside the network. In this talk, we are going to present our efforts to boost mobile network performance and reliability through harnessing device-side intelligence. We empower in-device analytics which not only provides open access (in software) to fine-grained cellular information and discloses what happens but also sheds light on why and how. This facilitates researchers and developers to readily and quickly obtain low-level cellular network information and renovate the design by leveraging the potential intelligence and flexibility on the end devices.

Bio

Chunyi Peng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University. She received her Ph.D in Computer Science at University of California, Los Angeles in 2013. Prior to UCLA, she had worked as an associate/assistant researcher in the Wireless and Networking Group at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) between 2005 and 2009. She has been working on the broad areas of mobile networking, system and security, with a focus on 5G/4G/3G cellular networks, wireless networking, mobile sensing and network security. She has lead 4 NSF projects in mobile network and security and has received the Best Community Paper Award at MobiCom’16 (partially covered in this talk).
